"Exciting new package design... New open front packages for maximum product display... Complete explanation of toy's action on back panel of package." Mighty Tonka packaging took on a whole new look in 1975. Prominently displayed on the diagonal from the upper left of the display window, is a red triangle with Tonka in bright white letters. Below the display window to the left, is the age grade for the toy and to the right is the description in all block caps. Example descriptions are: MIGHTY LOADER, MIGHTY DUMP, MIGHTY GRADER, MIGHTY BULLDOZER. The age grade and description are all in bright white. NOTE: The age grade floats left. The description floats right as viewed by the consumer.

And while the packaging remained the same in 1975 and 1976, the toy in the box could help narrow the year. In 1975, cab decals were still black script. The lone example not following the standard layout was the Mighty Forklift that used block letters and the current Tonka logo. Review the examples of the 1975 Mighty Dump and Mighty Loader above. In 1976, the cab decal read "Mighty" in familiar black script, followed by "Tonka" in white letters inside a red oval.

Packaging in 1977 was again little changed from 1976. But the change is enough to differentiate the 1977 model year packaging from 1975 and 1976. Below the window and floating left is the age grade. Below the window and floating right is the MODEL NUMBER. The examples of the packaging for the 3900 and 3920 pictured above are typical. Other 1977 models would be identified as 3885 Mighty Tonka Winnebago, the 3907 Mighty Tonka Bulldozer and the 3915 Mighty Tonka Wrecker.

Tonka introduced 2 new models to the Mighty series in 1977, model #3985 Mighty Tonka Custom Van (in 2 colors) and model #3986 Mighty Tonka Adventure Buggy (also in 2 colors). The packaging for the new models varied from the typical 1977 boxes so the consumer could easily find the new models in a sea of Tonka trucks. Diagonal from the red Tonka triangle is a smaller but highly visible red triangle with white lettering that reads "NEW Great for girls & boys." Graphics on the boxes came in 2 different flavors as the examples above indicate. May 2015)
